About Karen

Hi, I'm Karen, your photographer and the creative art director of Finessence Photography.

I'm a Melburnian, grew up in Canterbury, a soccer fanatic and a real chatterbox.  I have a cat named Gucci, my singing teacher was an Aus Idol runner up, my past career was solving IT/business problems and I'm endlessly hunting for fabulous pairs of high-heeled shoes.

But my greatest find is my camera.  We are inseparable.  I can't go anywhere without my camera because I'm always searching for that picture-perfect moment.

I do fashion shoots, but I'm fascinated with human interactions.  I cringe when I see fake poses, but what I heart is people doing their own thing in a natural way.  It’s worth capturing. Outside of the shopping mall, you might find me in the kickboxing ring where I don't mind showing off my guns. Apparently my instructor says I throw a good cross, which helps with carrying the big camera lenses at photo shoots.

You'll expect collaboration, buckets loads of creative concepts and ideas, gorgeous use of light and shade, contrasting colours that pop, and I can't stress enough, fun fun fun when you hang out with me!

Hi, I'm Alan, Karen’s other half.  I’m the guy photographer and technical geek of Finessence Photography.

I was born and bred in Canberra (apparently a rare breed), did a stint of IT consulting in Sydney and am now living my dream as a photographer in Melbourne.

I love basketball, snooker and snowboarding, but my pastime is digging into a juicy medium rare steak with mushroom sauce with Karen at my favourite local pub. I even have a food blog and twitter!

Being a typical man, I love my cars.  However, these days you will find me at Borders, reading up on the latest photography gadgets, computers or studying the latest fashion trends so I can keep up with Karen.  If you ask Karen she’ll tell you I have a great eye for fabulous high-heel shoes.

Like Karen, I'm not thrilled with fake poses and staged moments.  I bring out the natural beauty of your portraits by giving clear, simple directions and having fun at the same time.  This means that you will get to experience some of my silly jokes (apparently I can be very funny, as you may see from some of my photos).  You might even find me in some awkward positions as I try to get my next award-winning print; hopefully it will be with one of your photos!
